San Diego Comic-Con International 2020

Comic-Con@Home, July 22, 2020 – July 26, 2020 — 2020 was a wild year. With the pandemic canceling in-person events, SDCC launched Comic-Con@Home, a fully virtual convention. Fans everywhere could tune in to panels, sneak peeks, and behind-the-scenes content from the comfort of their homes (free of charge!).

Even though I missed the in-person experience, it was smart of SDCC to do this. Each day I was emailed newsletters updating me on what was streaming and what to check out that day, which made it easy to keep up with the schedule. Big franchises like The Boys, Star Trek Universe, and Adventure Time: Distant Lands – BMO shared exclusive clips and insights from creators, making it feel like I was still part of the excitement.

The virtual Artist Alley and Online Exhibit Hall were also highlights. Fans could browse indie creators, shop exclusive merch, and enjoy a virtual Masquerade costume competition. For me personally, being home with my kids, who had just turned one, was a huge bonus. I didn’t miss four days of their life and still got a great SDCC experience.

Comic-Con@Home wasn’t the same as Hall H or the crowded show floor, but it captured the spirit of the Con. Watching panels, exploring virtual exhibits, and connecting online reminded me that Comic-Con is about celebrating what we love together, no matter where we are.
